There’s an emphasis these days on cheaper, faster, “easier” products, especially marketed toward do-it-yourself home improvement audiences. We get it! The benefits are attractive, especially when you’re a busy homeowner trying to get a job done. Who doesn’t want to slap on one coat and call it good?
But easier and faster doesn’t always mean better. In fact, it often means the opposite.
A lot of those products are water-based, and that’s why they’re so easy to use and apply. Based on our own, direct experience, however, we prefer oil-based penetrating deck stains. They don’t just sit on top of the wood, like paint, but saturate the surface deeply. And they don’t just saturate the top layers of the wood, but continue to work their way right through the lumber. This offers an unparalleled level of protection.
